Code alongs
The code along videos linked from the course schedule page serve as an additional resource for getting coding practice.
The files you can use to follow along with the videos come from the template repository at https://github.com/sta199/code-alongs.
Set up your code alongs repository
You only need to do this once, at the start of the semester. After that, you’ll use the same repository for all of the code alongs.
Go to https://github.com/sta199/code-alongs and click on the green Use this template button, then select Create a new repository.
Under Owner, select the sta199-f26 organization.
Name your repository
code-alongs-yourname, replacingyournamewith your own name.Keep the repository private.
Click Create repository.
Clone the repository
On your new repository’s page, click on the green CODE button and copy the HTTPS URL.
In Positron, go to New ➛ New Folder From Git… and paste the URL into the dialog box labeled Git repository URL.
Click OK. Positron will clone the repo and open it as a new workspace.
If you need a refresher on cloning a repository, see the Clone your first repository section of Lab 0.
Work through a code along
Open the
.qmdfile that corresponds to the video you’re watching.Write your code in the document as you follow along with the video, rendering as you go to check your work.
When you’re done, commit and push your work:
- Go to the Source Control pane and stage the files you changed.
- Write a brief, informative commit message.
- Click Sync to push your commits to GitHub.
This is the same workflow you’ll use for your labs, homework, and project, so the code alongs are a good low-stakes place to practice it. Committing and pushing also means your work is backed up on GitHub and available to you from any device.
